Palm was one of the first companies to enter the mobile computing market. When businesses started using PDAs, Palm with their low power OS, intuitive interface, and practical design became a major player. However, as cell phones and PDAs began to merge into smartphones Palm's market share began to decrease. Research in Motion created the Blackberry, whose corporate email capabilities made it the king for business users. On the other end of the market Apple's iPhone bridged the gap between style and functionality and began to woo consumers who had previously stayed on the sideline. After losing much of their business clients and missing the consumer market Palm's smartphones were regulated to the low end of the mobile device market. Palm is looking to change all that. With their backs to the wall the company went back to the drawing board and created a fresh new device for 2009, with an operating system to match. The new device, the Pre, has received raving reviews from all how have gotten their hands on it. With one of the longest histories in the mobile computing industry Palm may be poised to regain its place in the market.
