General Electric (also known as GE, the company's eponymous stock ticker symbol) is one of the largest and most well known conglomerates in corporate America. A multinational with a long history for outperforming market indexes and paying generous dividends over the long term, it also has a history of short term volatility. Founded in 1892 and based in Fairfield Connecticut, General Electric has produced a wide range of home and industrial products and services throughout its history.Currently the conglomerate is divided into four segments: GE Capital, Energy Infrastructure, Technology Infrastructure, and NBC Universal. General Electric was particularly hard hit in the recent downturn, regularly falling much more than the S&P index. Like so much else in the broader economy, the company's misfortunes can be largely attributed to liberal lending practices and an over extension of its finance division. GE was further hurt by the damage the bust in the housing bubble caused its appliance division, which it has been actively trying to sell. Well its shares are currently selling at significantly lower prices then the highs of last year, GE still offers a generous dividend of $1.24 per share and a P/E ratio of 6.5.
